AAA Battery, a trio of trippy, time-traveling troubadours, has made one hell of an entrance with their debut album, Year of the Woman. Exploring the outer reaches of their art guided only by their talent and creativity; Fred, Joe and Spookey catapult conventions into space and dance across decades, caring only that the music is compelling, joyful and fresh. "Velvet Pants," with lyrical sensibilities reminiscent of the Presidents of the United States of America, moves from haunting Alice In Chains phrasing in the verses to catchy seventies/eighties pop in the chorus to spoken word a la Tool's "Vicarious." Versatile vocals and arrangements remind us at times of rock icons like David Bowie: in the dream-like interlude halfway through "Space" I hear 21st century echoes of "Space Oddity" and the vocals of "And Then" remind me of Ziggy Stardust's theatric, plaintive voice. Weaving threads from the seventies, eighties and nineties into brilliant aural tapestries, AAA Battery pays its respects to our roots while looking to the future. "Ten Steps Back," "Jenna" and "Robots in the Sun" remind me of high school in the eighties while "Tea Time" is simultaneously buoyant and melancholy like a quintessentially nineties Blind Melon tune with attentive guitar throughout and a great sing-along section. "Verbalize Your Head" is an addicting and approachable song that instantly brings a smile to your face. Like its perfectly anachronistic cover art, "Year of the Woman" is an innovative, fresh, gutsy first album from three guys comfortable enough in their art and creative enough in spirit to crash through conventions and produce compelling, joyful 21st century rock.
