The latest in a long line of mad-scientist pop purveyors, Adam Richman recorded this full-length pretty much on his own, locked away in a basement studio with little more than a synthesizer, a guitar, and a heaping helping of inspiration from across the decades. To his credit, Patience and Science isn't burdened with the preciousness that often accompanies similar one-man shows, nor does it show an overt debt to any one forebear, be it the Beatles or Big Star. Elements of the latter band's guileless popcraft show up in songs like the aching "What Can Make You Mine?," but just as often, Richman shifts gears for a pulsing foray into neo–new wave, such as the herky-jerky "Warsaw." The Pennsylvania native has a fondness for layered vocals, and while that can lead to sugar shock if slathered on without care, Richman gets just enough air into the choruses of "I'm So Crazy" and "Mary Anne" to spin a cotton candy–like cloud. But since Richman laces his concoctions with whip-smart lyrics and clever arrangements, there's no need to file Patience and Science under "guilty pleasures" -- plain old "pleasures" will do just fine.
