With one e.p to their name as the band Sixtycycle, and personnel joining ranks from as far and wide as metal outfit Primer55, Darwin’s Waiting Room and Redbelly, it was only a matter of time before Alston got noticed and raised their profile. Former M.C.A A&R leading light Gary Ashley saw the talent and promptly signed the band to his newly formed Repossession record label. Given a hard edge from Eddie Wohl and Anthrax guitarist Rob Cagianno’s production, Alston explore numerous possibilities within the alt-rock genre combining them with the necessary melody. Kobie Jackson’s capable vocals are reminiscent of Headrush’s Waymon Boone, with soul and variety being added to the commercial riff based incessancy of ‘Anna’ or the extremely Splender-like ‘Ordinary’. Melodic nu-metal is the staple for ‘2&10 Low’ and opener ‘Recon Seed’ with distorted vocal arrangements, atmospherics and crunching guitar. Whilst the eclecticism exhibited by ‘Voodoo for Fun and Profit’ is sure to have its critics, it is this very quality that makes it a worthy release, separating it from the many mediocre releases that overwhelm the genre.
