While signed to Decca Records, Benny relocated to Nashville and for much of 1961, he worked as a song-writer for Champion Music. This series presents some of Benny's demos from this period and though these songs were geared towards the growing teen idol market, Benny's great sense of craftsmanship and powerful vocals raise the bar much higher than typical Frankie and Fabian fare. Instead Of Me has a distinct early Del Shannon sound, while Eyes Of Tears boasts a generous helping of Buddy Holly. Benny offered two versions of Only Time Will Tell, one with a Roy Orbison styled bridge and another that echoes the Everly Brothers. The track Forever, Now or Never was reprised from Benny's original stripped down 1957 Tri-Dec demo. Country star Darrell McCall waxed (What'll I Do) Call The Zoo on Capitol and Sonny Hines scored a hit for Decca Records with Benny's Give Me Back My Heart. Touchdown was Glo and Jimmy Isle on Diamond. Essentially it's Rollin' To The Jukebox Rock with football lyrics and though the concept is corny, reprising Elvis' "Number 47 said to to number 3" is a stroke of pure genius. Here for the first time are Benny's own versions of these three compositions. ~ Billy Miller
