Trevor Tahiem Smith Jr. grew up with other rappers Jay-Z and the Notorious B.I.G. in New York, and changed his name to Busta Rhymes at the suggestion of Chuck D. of Public Enemy. At 17 Rhymes was a member of the rap group Leaders of the New School along with Dinco D and Charlie Brown. The band got their break touring with Public Enemy.They released their debut album A Future Without a Past in 1991. The album was well-received by critics and included three Top 10 singles, "Case of the P.T.A.", "Sobb Story", and "The International Zone Coaster" which got to No.1 on the Hot Rap Singles chart. The group split after the release of the follow-up album T.I.M.E. (The Inner Mind's Eye), with personality clashes cited as the reason.In 1993 Rhymes made his first appearance in a major film Who's the Man, which was described as rap's first whodunnit and featured a string of rap stars. Now solo, Rhymes released his debut album The Coming in 1996. The album made it to No.6 on the Billboard 200, eventually going platinum promoted by the US and UK hit "Woo Hah!! Got You All in Check". The single earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Solo Performance and put Busta Rhymes firmly on the map.His 1998 follow-up release Extinction Level Event (Final World Front) featured a collaboration with Janet Jackson "What's It Gonna Be?!", which was a Top 10 hit in the US and UK. He also released The Imperial Album as a member of the group Flipmode Squad.After three more releases he signed to top producer Dr Dre's Aftermath label in 2003. His debut release for the label, The Big Bang, provided Rhymes with his first No.1 album. The album featured contributions from Stevie Wonder, Rick James, Missy Elliot and will.i.am, and has gone on to sell over 2.5 million copies worldwide.In addition to Rhymes music career he also has a long list of films to his credit including the Shaft remake, Finding Forrester and Narc.
