Canyon's November 2002 live performance at the New York City club Arlene's Grocery was captured remarkably well by DCN (Digital Club Network) on Live in NYC, showcasing how Canyon's swirling and fractured space rock transfers to a live setting wonderfully. The band are in excellent form as they trounce through six songs from their sophomore release, Empty Rooms, one presumably new composition in the slightly countrified "Rio Grande Rail," and two covers, the Rolling Stones' "Play With Fire" and a Neil Young tune, "Cortez the Killer," which closes the set with eight and a half minutes of a slow-building elliptical progression as a bed for ribbons of distorted and treated guitar work. The entire Live in NYC album never breaks a mid-tempo stride; instead, Canyon play almost underwater, crying out through upper-register tremolo guitar and queasy organ lines that push psychedelic overtones into the fold. It is nice to hear a document provide a window into the talents of a promising band pulling off an unstrained performance without the safety net of studio trickery, which makes Live in NYC augment Canyon's catalog very nicely.
