During her lengthy but little-known career, French-American beauty Carole Davis has been many things, including an actress, topless model, animal rights activist, and musician, and with her debut album from 1989 it seemed painfully obvious that "musician" was the weakest link of that sequence. That album, the unaptly-titled "Heart Of Gold," was a raunchy, immature set of sex-obsessed R&B/hip-hop, accompanied by a tasteless, unflattering picture of herself. Four years later on this album, whose title and picture are equally contradictory, she strikes a considerably more angelic pose in the cover photo and, more importantly, dumps her wild party girl image for a beautiful set of laid-back, sublime alterna-soul with an eerie, intoxicating ambience that flows beautifully throughout the entire set, particularly on "Kiss Me" and "A Thousand And One Nights." There's also a beautifully textured love ballad in the title track. If you should happen to read my less-than-forgiving review of "Heart Of Gold," don't let it sway you from checking out this album, because they're about as unlike each other as two albums by the same artist can be.
