As the plot of the supernatural adventure Darker Than Black continues to unfold, the series shifts abruptly from violent action to peaceful interludes and back again. Hei penetrates a secret laboratory of the Pandora organization to steal a mysterious, powerful fragment of a meteorite. In flashbacks, the viewer learns that as a boy, Hei watched the stars with his sister, but no one on Earth has seen the stars for years, due to the effects of Hell's Gate. His erstwhile comrade Yin showed promise as a pianist, until she was traumatized by the deaths of her parents. She's now just a "doll," a being who's barely sentient, and Hei must destroy her lest a hostile organization capture her and gain the information hidden in her brain. Director Tensai Okamura offers intriguing glimpses of what seems to be a compelling storyline, but they're only glimpses, and Darker Than Black feels like less than the sum of its parts. (Rated TV MA: violence, violence against women, grotesque imagery, alcohol and tobacco use)
