Diana Krall - Live in Paris (Audio CD - 10/01/2002)

From a fan’s perspective, the best thing about Diana Krall’s live performances is that she presents the same cool-calm-and-collected demeanor that has endeared her recordings to throngs of listeners. No, the pianist-singer doesn’t get wild-and-wooly on stage; she knows what she’s great at and delivers it with confidence and style. This sumptuous performance, which finds Krall supported by a first-rate jazz unit (including drummer Jeff Hamilton and bassist John Clayton) and a full string orchestra, is a lovely recital of standards, many of which have come to be associated with Krall herself. Her live renditions exhibit the measured, ever-in-control, yet (at the appropriate times) slyly sexy interpretations that have become a Krall trademark. She proves herself no slouch at the piano, either. A fun bonus is a studio recording of Billy Joel’s anthem “Just the Way You Are,” sporting a Michael Brecker tenor solo, which Krall cut for the film Guru.
