Okay, his last name is Young. And General Hospital soap hunk Jacob Young is certainly that: young. Does that mean his music sounds young? On his self-titled debut, the answer is yes. Musically, it's kind of a fun, pop ock Jimmy Buffet-meets-John Cougar Mellancamp-meets-Evan and Jaron affair, with Caribbean, country, and urban influences. The lyrics, on the other hand, are a mouthful -- a bit busy and amateurish. And Young's vocal delivery sounds tense and forced. While the album's pairing of music and vocals is generally incongruous -- Young's lackluster performance is not on par with the rocking music -- there are a couple of redeeming moments. The melodic rock ballads "Something More Than This" and "The Opposite of Everything" manage to appeal in their wistful delivery. Young's raspy vocal performance sinks the ball in the pocket on these two heartfelt songs. Elsewhere, the rocking "Devil's in the Details," complete with turntable stylings, moves with fervor, as does Young's performance. Young lacks a presence. He just doesn't hit it home on this disc. But the actor/singer is young and has plenty of time to develop his craft. But he shouldn't check out of the hospital just yet.
