It's not entirely their best stuff--many Lemonheads fans think their punkier '80s albums on the Taang! label, not covered here, are better than their poppy '90s albums for Atlantic--but given how spotty some of those '90s albums are, THE BEST OF THE LEMONHEADS is a more-than-welcome recapitulation of the high points.
Pointedly opening with "Confetti," probably the catchiest song Evan Dando ever wrote, this set emphasizes the bright pop songs over the darker, more disturbing tunes that peppered the Atlantic albums. Gems like "Into Your Arms," the Juliana Hatfield duet "My Drug Buddy," "The Great Big No," and the lovely though inscrutable "It's a Shame About Ray" show off Dando's melodic and vocal skills at their best, and the goofy cover of "Mrs. Robinson" recalls the group's one real assault on the mainstream.
