Moonlight Survived is the debut album from Moments in Grace, a Florida-based combo with ex-members of Twothirtyeight and As Friends Rust. Recorded with veteran helmer Brian McTernan (Thrice, Hot Water Music), Moonlight is a rather dramatic entry in the emo/post-hardcore axis. Jeremy Griffith is a tremendously expressive vocalist, with a fluttering range and long notes like he just swallowed a jar of melancholy jelly. He sticks to the usual lyrical themes -- romantic fall-out, soul-baring confession, vaguely spiritual deep thoughts -- and tends to turn the centers of songs to atmospheric tangents of layered strings and vocal harmonies. That dynamic guides opener "Strata," as well as "The Blurring Lines of Loss"; other songs, like "My Stunning Bride," or "We Feel the Songs," suggest a mixture of U2 and Sunny Day Real Estate. Moonlight Survived is McTernan's first release on his Salad Days imprint, a vanity job through Atlantic.
