Most high school marching bands make Up with People revues seem positively funky and soulful by comparison, but every now and then the stars align, the vision and raw talent are there, and you get something that suggests the J.B.'s with training wheels. Compiled by Josh "DJ Shadow" Davis, the second volume in the Schoolhouse Funk series assembles more choice bits from self-released high school band records of the early to mid-'70s. One can scarcely imagine the energy and endurance required to realize a project of this scope, but Davis delivers in spades, putting together a truly engaging listening experience so fun and funky you'll forget the music comes from pimple-faced teens in ersatz military regalia. While some of these cuts originate from New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles, more unlikely petri dishes like Columbus, OH, and Champaign, IL, also represent. Indeed, what's most special about Schoolhouse Funk II is how it lays to waste prejudices at every turn.
