On their first EP for Fat Possum (which cherry-picks songs from their two previous EPs), the Australian indie pop quartet San Cisco sound more like 20 people than they do four, calling to mind large ensembles like Architecture in Helsinki and I'm from Barcelona with their large-sounding vocal arrangements and wide range of instrumentation that fills up every nook with sunny, innocent sound. Like the best work of those bands, the songs hold up their end of the bargain, each one sporting instantly memorable choruses and at least one solid hook like the playful vocal interplay between Scarlett Stevens and Jordi Davieson on "Awkward," Stevens' rambunctious drumming on "Golden Revolver," the super melodic saxes and light-hearted falsetto vocals on "Girls Do Cry," and Davieson's intimate and open-hearted vocals on "Reckless." As an introduction to the band, the EP couldn't be any better. It lays out San Cisco's melodic strengths and their easygoing charm in an easy-to-digest chunk and definitely leaves you wanting more of their sweet indie pop goodness.
