No Makeup, Summer Cannibals’ debut from New Moss Records, features all the prerequisites for a gloomy, dangerous and pessimistic romp through Seattle in the rain – or in this case, the lanes of Portland, Oregon. It features the guitar-bass-drums garage model, minimalist arrangements, erudite pottymouth lyrics, and punky energy combined with heavy metal aggression. Besides having a deliriously quirky album cover shot in a dreary light (that dog is freakin’ cute), Summer Cannibals have a youthful, laughing spirit of uncaring nonchalance. That goes along quite well with the post-post-post-grunge mode they celebrate. Also, they’re 75% girl, and that has precedent in Hole and L7. Even if it’s not too original, they’re modeling themselves after good stock.
