And Then There Was Bass: Dis Bass Game Real compiles the best tracks from contemporary bass dance music (a bottom-heavy and ungodly marriage of disco and techno) artists circa 1997 into more than an hour of pounding rhythm tracks supporting little of any musical consequence. It's incomprehensible that the classy, genuinely talented Babyface graces this anthology (co-producing with Daryl Simmons a remix of "Have I Never" for 69 Boys and K-Nock). B-Rock and the Bizz pump up the volume on the first single, "MyBabyDaddy" (which loops the Emotions' "Best of My Love"), and dance diva Miss Dana lights into Shirley Murdock's torchy "As We Lay." Luke, already the proud progenitor of such platinum hits as "Me So Horny," proposes "Let's Ride," and Charles Trahan transforms the Rupert Holmes hit single "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" into "U Like Pina Colada." That ingenious title provides a pretty accurate indication of the level of creativity demonstrated on this album.
