Playlist: The Very Best of the Verve Pipe assembles 14 of the Michigan-based post-grunge band's best-known tracks. Although their catalog is bookended by several independent releases, this collection is pulled exclusively from their three RCA releases, which began with their Jerry Harrison-produced 1996 major-label debut, Villains. Of course, their breakout hit, "The Freshmen," is included, although the version featured here is the "Pop Mix" and not the album mix. Other highlights include the singles "Hero" and "Never Let You Down," taken from their 1999 and 2001 albums, respectively. This is an ably compiled highlight reel representing the commercial peak of one of the best alt-rock purveyors of the late '90s.
