Ever since 2 Live Crew first raised the ire of conservative America with its Spice Channel rhymes, double-time beats, and low-end boom, Miami bass has been one of pop music's great guilty pleasures. Today, ten years after "Me So Horny" burst forth from urban stereos, there are far too many bass compilations out there--most of them offering the same storehouse of clunky butt-jokes and boring click-track beats. So, start here, especially to hear "MyBabyDaddy" by B-Rock & The Bizz. A hilarious update of Otis Redding's "Tramp," the cut replaces the usual Miami bass quickstep with a sunny, cheeky buoyancy. The rest of the album is a flurried survey of the genre--from Luke's "Let's Ride" to the Southern Playas "I Want To Ball," to cheesy novelties, like Da Real One's "U Like Pina Colada." Eventually, what comes across isn't the pornographic offense to decency Southern conservatives squawk about, but a Dionysian celebration of the power of bombastic beats and beautiful booty.
